Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the accuracy of a newly discovered fossil that resembles bee nests. The article presents three sources to prove that the fossil does not belong to a bee while the lecturer casts doubt on all of them. The details of the contrast between the reading and the lecture are provided below.
First of all, the author claims that as there is no other fossil belonging to a bee that dates back to 200 million years ago, we can not accept this one as a fossilized bee. The lecturer challenges this point. She says that we should consider the circumstances under which this preservation could happen. We know the trees that produce resin which is a vital substance for preserving bees, were quite rare at that time, but, it does not mean they did not exist at all.
Secondly, the author states that since the first flowers emerged about 125 million years ago, the existence of bees before the flowers is doubtful as they need to be in close association with the flowers to survive. In contrast, the lecturer refutes this claim. She thinks that the old bees could feed on nonflowering plants. Therefore their life could not be avoided.
Thirdly, the author mentions that the fossilized chambers lack some parts of modern bee nests. The lecturer, on the other hand, thinks that there is convincing chemical evidence that the fossils contain waterproofing materials used by modern bees.
