To choose own business or franchise
The reading mentioned that starting our own business is more risky compared to buying a franchise from already established brand company. The professor suggests that even if buying a franchise is less risky, there are several disadvantages involved in this process.
Firstly, professor mentioned about the recent study which calls a doubt on buying a franchise license. Study suggests that brand companies are forcing their franchise owners to buy very specific goods and services which are highly expensive in the competitive market. Moreover, franchise owners aren't allowed to buy similar kind of goods and services which are available at cheaper rate in the market.
Secondly, franchise owners are supposed to pay 6% of their sales profit to their parent company in compensation to the advertisement of products. However, one flaw in this data is brand companies are advertising their own products and not their franchise owners' business.
Thirdly, the most important factor, before considering to buy franchise license, is security because it is less risky to buy a franchise than starting independent business. But, passage doesn't discuss about the other option available. People, who are willing to do the business, can also look into buying other independent business. The study has reflected positive impact of this option. As per this study, the business can grow twice in four years if people buy the already established independent business.
In sum, professor suggested various flaws into the reading passage and described the alternative options available to people who are willing to take risk and want to try their venture.
