The graph below gives information about international migration to the UK, 1999 -2008
The chart compares the differences between the rates of immigration, emigration and net migration in Britain in a 9-year-period between 1999 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that both immigration and emigration rates witnessed a general increase; whereas the figure for the former was significantly higher than the latter. Meanwhile, the net migration rate fluctuated sharply during the time shown. Units are measured in thousands of people.
In 1999, the number of people came and lived in the UK was at around 450 thousand people, 150 thousand people more than the number of citizens leaving the country. During the next 5 years, the former witnessed an increase of about 250 thousand people; while the latter just saw a rise of about 50 thousand people. The net migration rate stood at about 180 thousand people, then it remained so until peaking at nearly 250 thousand people in 2004.
The figure for immigration was highest at 600 thousand people in 2006 before falling slightly to just approximately 590 thousand people in the end. It was followed by the number of people who emigrated at 400 thousand people in 2006, then decreasing sharply to around 320 thousand people in 2007 before surging to over 410 in 2008. The figure for net migration then dropped to around 180 thousand people in 2008 despite a high peak of approximately 210 thousand people in 2007.
