The table shows the number of employees and factories producing silk in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901
The table compares the number of workers and manufactories making silk in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The most striking feature is that the figures for women working in factories were higher than those for the men each year. In addition, the number of factories increased gradually, whereas there were fewer and fewer employees during the time surveyed.
In 1851, there were exactly 272 factories in 1815 and this figure climbed dramatically to 623 factories in 1901. In contrast, the total silk workforce was highest, at 130750 people and it then dropped steadily and reached its bottom at just only 38942 employees in the next 50 years.
A drop in the total employees as a result of a decrease gradually in the number of male and female workers. There were 76786 female worked in the factories compared to 53964 male workers in 1851. However, the period between 1851 and 1901 saw a considerable fall each year in the number of women employees and then reached its bottom at 13375 workers. Similarly, the figure for men dropped quickly to 13375 people in 1901, a decrease of nearly 40000 people within 50 years.
