The reading discusses that zebra mussels are strongly a serious threat to fish populations. The author listed three factors to support this idea. However, the speaker casts doubt on this issue and presents some evidence to refute all three factors.
First, the author argues that history is shown that they are unstoppable invasions. Because they stuck to the ship and spread all the ocean. In contrast, the speaker rejects this claim and asserts that they were manageable but the people did not have sufficient knowledge of how to control them. For example, they could kill them by empty this water from the ship, in spite of surviving in the water, they will die in a dry place.
Second, the author asserts that they were hardy species that can dominate in a new habitat as they did not have any predators. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this idea and declares that in the beginning, birds did not have any food resources they eat the zebra mussel, and because of that they became dominant.
Last but not least, the author indicates that they fed on planktons so they caused the population of fish to diminish. On the other hand, the speaker states that although the overall population of fish decreased and they had the negative impacts on them and plants, they generated nutrition material that fish could absorb them. Therefore, the speaker rebuts this claim too by providing this reason.
