Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.
Every year, the price of college tuition increases. Even with scholarships, there are those who cannot afford to attend college. It would be beneficial to offer free university education to those students who cannot afford it, but ultimately it is best that the policy is not implemented.
It is best that the policy is not implemented because it will put others at a disadvantage and create a shortage in the work force. For those who can afford the tuition, they would be paying for the same education that some are getting for free. If everyone ends up getting university education, why should some people pay and others don’t? Although it is disadvantageous for those who cannot afford university education, the others are making an economic investment. This conflict can be assuaged by making use of federal grants and loans, which are catered to those who cannot afford education and can alleviate the burden. Also if the policy is implemented, then there would be a decline in plumbers and electricians, as people can become engineers and doctors for free. This leads to a broken society. These consequences are why the policy should not be implemented.
Despite these consequences, it is understandable why the policy should be implemented. For some, they would be the first one in their family to get a higher education. It can break the pattern of poverty; they would be able to provide for themselves and their family a brighter future. The promise of a brighter future however, is not worth the societal conflicts implementation of the policy would inflict
In summation, the consequences of implementing the policy outweigh the benefits, therefore making it logical for the government to not offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.
