The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The chart illustrates the trends in housing, including a more detailed look at the changes in the ratio of families staying in rented housing to owner-occupiers in England and Wales over the span of 83 years from 1918 to 2011.
It can be seen from the graph that the gap between rented and owned accommodation was considerable in 1918, which then narrowed to strike a balance in 1971. However, from that moment on, the gap had widened again as the number of households becoming owners had increased.
Regarding rentals, the percentage of families choosing such type of residence had more than halved from nearly 77 to 35 percent by the end of the given period, showing an early highest rate in 1918, a subsequent steady fall to its lowest in 2001 (holding above 30 percent), and a further leveling off.
By contrast, the rate of privately-owned housing went up during the same timescale. Starting from about 22 percent in 1918, it reached a peak of nearly 70 percent in 2001 to slightly decline (around 65%) in 2011.
The only exception, however, was 1971 when both rates leveled off, at 50 percent.
