The given chart demonstrates the proportion of owned and rented houses in England and Wales during the 93-year period of 1918 and 2011.
Overall, there was a downward trend in the number of houses being rented and an increase in owned accommodation.
In 1918, most people preferred renting their place with the number of almost 80%, whereas only over 20% of people owned their house. From 1918 to 1971, there was a sharp decrease in the percentage of houses being rented by over 30% to a sharp 50% in 1971. During the same period, more and more households decided to put their ownership over their accommodation, with an increase of 30% to the percentage of 50%.
During the next 30 years, the downward trend in renting houses continued to just 30% of people renting a place to live in 2001. At the same time, almost 20% more households decided to invest in long-term accommodation, making the final percent of almost 70% in 2001.
However, during the next 10-year period, a slight decrease of less than 10% was seen in the number of owned households whereas a small raise of around 5% in the percent of rented places was observed.
