altruistic act
The lecturer discusses how the altruistic acts of the meerkat mammal and humans can be considered as non-altruistic after having a close examination or study of them.
The lecture states that the meerkat sentinel is positioned as the guard of the group after having the food. This is in opposition to what is stated in the passage which is the sentinel goes without food while others eat. Also once the sentinel meerkat has given the alarm, it can easily escape as it is positioned to a nearby burrow and has the least chances of risking its life. The lecturer also states that if an alarm signal is given, the other animal in the group tend to move or gather at one place. This makes them more vulnerable as a target for the predator rather than the sentinel meerkat who gave the alarm signal. This two observations opposes the statement in the passsage that the sentinel meerkat put themselves in grave danger and are more at risk to a predator.
The other behavious discussed by the lecturer is regarding humans donation of an organ to another person. That person may be a relative or a stranger. It states that when a person donates his/her organ, he does not get any tangible rewards rather he/she gets a reward in a non-materialistic form, like a token of appreciation from the patient or esteemed value of recognition from the society. The lecturer states that some people may feel that these non-materialistic rewards are more important and thus introduces a sense of selfishness in their character. This is again in opposition to what is stated in the passsage regarding the donation of body organ to another person as an altruistic act.
