The pie chart illustrates the main categories cause the low-quality land. The table gives information about the effects of these on three different regions in the last decade of the twentieth century.
Overall, there were three main reasons for land degradation were described in the pie chart and over-grazing was the most principle one. In the table, Europe had the highest proportion of unproductive land.
The over-grazing had the largest percentage, accounted for 35%. While the corresponding figure of deforestation was slightly lower, at 30%. The third reason is over-cultivation which represented 28%, higher than other reason by 21%.
Approximately one-fifth total land in Europe was degraded. This proportion in North America is 5%, lower than in Oceania, which was at 13%. The percentage figure of over-grazing in Oceania was the highest, at 11.3%, followed by Europe and North America at 5.5% and 1.5% respectively. In Europe, deforestation was the main category causing land degradation, made up 9.8%, higher than over-cultivation by 2.1%. While over-cultivation had the largest proportion in three categories in North America (3.3%), it did not affect Oceania. Beside over-grazing, land in Oceania is less productive because of deforestation, which accounted for 1.7%, was about nine times the corresponding figure in North America.
