In this set of material, the writer strongly postulates that sending people on an asteroid would be a successful colonization option, and provides three reasons to endorse its idea. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that arguments made in the reading are dubious and unpractical, and gainsays each of them.
First and foremost, the reading begins by asserting that asteroid low gravity provides the favorable circumstances for landing and taking off as spacecraft would not be repelled forcefully. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this claim by pointing out that no doubt low gravitational pull is helpful for landing and taking off, but it would cause serious health risks to space crafts. To be more specific, low gravity would result in the loss of muscle mass and bone density, which are deleterious for long term stay on asteroid.
Furthermore, the lecture mentions that there is no guarantee that metals found on asteroids would keep the high monetary value. He explained that because of the saturation in the market and high supply of metal, it could be possible that the market price of metal would be reduced. Furthermore, the cost of transporting that metal would be extremely high, therefore mining would not get any benefit. These claims refute the writer's implication that mining on the asteroid would result in access to the valuable and precious metals, that would be pretty profitable.
Ultimately, the writer wraps its arguments by declaring that these asteroids are located closer to the earth therefore, it could be easy to reach them and land on them, unlike Mars. Not surprisingly, the speaker takes an issue with it by contending that though it is easy to reach on asteroids, it would be arduous to return. To be more clear, he explains that asteroids are closer to the earth's orbit at one point, but because of their revolution sometimes they go as far as Mars, or even farthest. Hence, this would not be a realistic approAch.
