The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates data about the amount of cargo carried by various means of transport over a 28-year period, between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the quantities of goods transported by pipeline, road and water, whereas rail saw some fluctuations over the period in question. Another interesting point is that despite the changes, road had always been the most used mode of transportation.
Looking at the details, about under 10 tonnes of goods were carried by pipeline in 1974, then there was a slight increase to around 15 tonnes in 1982, after which the figure remained quite stable until the 1990s. 1992 witnessed another moderate rise by around 4 tonnes, this is followed by a levelling off till the end of the period. As regards rail, the figure for this mode underwent some fluctuations, starting at exactly 40 tonnes and finishing at just over 40. If we look at water, the trend was also similar, but what stands out is that the amount of cargo carried on water remained stable during almost 20 years. In terms of road, there were some slight changes in the first two-thirds of the period, after which the figure considerably went up between 1994 and 1998 and finally peaked at under 100 tonnes in 2002. Rail started with more popularity at the beginning and this was still true when the period in question ended.
