The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph above illustrates the number of products delivered through four distinctive types of transportation, namely road, water, rail and pipeline, displayed in millions of tonnes during the period from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, road transportation remained the primary delivery method throughout the timespan, while the opposite was true for pipelines. Fluctuations were observable from all the categories, but all modes experienced upward trends except for rail, which returned to the starting level.
According to the chart, conveyance by road and rail expressed relatively similar trends, with the former starting at 70 million tonnes while the latter was at 40 million tonnes. Roads witnessed slight fluctuations but still held a steady upward trend throughout the timespan until 1994, and the data ended at a record high of 98 million tonnes, the highest point in the chart in 2002. Meanwhile, rail fell by 5 million tonnes by 1986, then saw a comparable fluctuation like roads for nine years, before rising to 40 million tonnes at the end.
Water-based and pipeline transportation also exhibited synonymous tendencies, with both figures seeing considerable increases, growing from 39 and 2,5 million tonnes to 58 million and 22 million tonnes, respectively, till 1982, at which point the two stayed moderately flat prior to parting ways. Water transport portrayed a subtle curve, then dipped to 50 million tonnes before bouncing back to 62 million. Pipeline, on the other hand, remained at the same level before dropping by 2 million tonnes in 1994 and saw no further changes until the end of the period.
