The table reveals the average distance measured in miles which each person traveled in England by various transport means during a 16-year period from 1985 to 2000. The figure for car stayed well beyond the others, at 3,199 miles in 1985 then increasing by over 1,000 from 3,199 miles to 4,806 miles. This was followed by that for long-distance bus, train and other, experiencing an unremarkable rise over the period. The distance traveled by taxi was significantly threefold its initial value, 42 miles in the last year compared with 13 miles in the first year.
