The line graph below shows the percentage of people in Africa subscribing to mobile and fixed line phones from 1994 to 2004. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The line chart compares the rate of African subscribers to mobile and landline phones over a ten-year period starting from 1994.
It is clear that there was an upward trend in the figure for Africans subscribing to each type of telephone. Also, significantly bigger increases were observed in the rate of cell phone users in Africa over the period shown.
In 1994, the percentage of African subscribing to fixed line phones was 1.7%, which was considerably higher than the proportion of cell phone subscribers, at a mere 0.06%. Over the next 7 years, these figures rose gradually to the same level of roughly 3% in 2001.
From 2001 onwards, the rate of landline phone users in Africa went up slowly, reaching a peak of 3.1% at the end of the period. In the meantime, the figure for African people using mobile handsets overtook the proportion of those subscribing to fixed line telephones, surging to a high of 8.8%, nearly triple the figure for fixed line phone subscribers in the same year.
