Modern communications mean that it’s no longer necessary to write letters.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Writing letters is no longer a reality for many people as the recent technologies of communication have replaced them. I totally agree with this statement and I will provide reasons and relevant examples in this essay.
The advent of email, sms, call and video call influenced how people communicate to each other and, consequently, reduced the need of sending letters. The first reasoning is the cost, because to write a letter we need paper, pen, envelope and stamp. Second, delivery is a slow process, and it's possible that the message arrives late and it is no longer important. For example, when I was a child I remember that my grandmother sent me a birthday card and it arrived just after my birthday. Nowadays, when she needs to speak with me, she send a message to my phone and I am able to reply in real time.
In addition, modern communication includes not only text, but also voice and video, and this dynamic is much more interesting. Take me as an example, I live far away from my parents and it's been a while we don't see each other, so when I speak with them I do a video call. It makes me feel closer and present in their lives because I can hear, see and talk with them and my sadness go away, just like magic. If these technologies haven't been created, we wouldn't have strong relationships with people that live in other cities or countries.
Overall, recent communications completely replaced letters. Sending a sms or doing a video call is cheaper, faster and more dynamic than simply writing a letter. Also, in the present age, we can build closer human relationships thanks to the technology.
