The diagrams below show the development of the horse over a period of 40 million years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pictures illustrate the evolution of the horse over a 40-year period.
From an overall perspective, it is apparent that there are four stages, beginning with the Ecohippus and ending with the horse at the present.
40 million years ago, the Ecohippus, the first horse, was quite small with a short tail and had no mane on its back. Its foot structure was quite simple and contained four digits which were relatively small. In the next stage, 30 million years ago, the Ecohippus evolved into Mesohippus with larger size and its foot reduced to three digits.
Then, 15 million years after, the horse had developed into Merychippus, with a similar size but had some significant changes in the structure of its foot. It still had three digits but had become much bigger. Especially, the middle digit had been dominant and divided into different segments.
Finally, the horse eventually grew into the modern ones with larger body size, curly mane, and long tail. There was a reduction in its digits, only a very big digit remained.
