The charts provide information about the proportion of households using 3 different electrical devices and how many hours per week they spent doing housework in one country in the period between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, what stands out from the first chart is that the rate of families using washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner experienced an upward trend. Another noteworthy observation is that the number of hours in doing housework in each household underwent a downward trend in this period.
In term of washing machine, the percentage of household using this device began at 40%, which was followed by a strong increase in the next 4 decades. After witnessing the slight decrease, this proportion peaked at over 70% in 2019. Meanwhile, although the share of family using refrigerator stayed at under 10%, it rocketed in the next 6 decades, reaching peak of 100% in 1980 and remaining stable until 2019. Finally, 30% of households used vacuum cleaner in the first year, but this number grew up moderately (20% per 2 decades) until peaked at 100% in 2 last decades.
In 1920, each household took 50 hours per week to do housework before this number plunged by 15 hours per 2 decades until 1960. Following this, the number of hours spent doing housework continue to decline albeit less pronounced in the remaining periods and hit the low at 10 hours per week in 2019.
