The two line graphs illustrate the proportion of families owning three different kinds of modern machines (washing machine, refrigerator, Vacuum cleaner) and how much time was spent each household weekly from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, there was an upward trend of households’ using electrical appliances whilst the opposite was true for the number of hours every week one family used for housework.
Beginning with 40% in 1920, the percentage of house owners having washing machines was, highest, compared with 30% of those with vacuum cleaners. The next 48 years witnessed a significant increase of 30% in the proportion of households purchasing washing machine, which slightly fluctuated from onwards. In addition, vacuum cleaners became more and more popular during the period when families with such machine accounted for 90% in 1980, and even up to 100% only 20 years later. Since then, all families used vacuum cleaner to assist them with housework. Most remarkably, from the fact that no one used refrigerators in 1920, the figure soared to 90% of houses with this useful machine after 40 years, reaching the peak of 100% during the last four decades.
On the contrary, with the assistance advanced appliances, domestic work took each family less time to finish every week. Particularly, at the commencing of the time period, every household had to spend 50 hours a week doing house work, followed by a remarkable chop of 30 hours in 1960. Subsequently, the figure continued to decrease gradually, ending the course with only 10 hours on the weekly basis.
