The bar chart compares how many USA citizens lived alone in 5 various age groups from 1850 to 2000.
Overall, it is clear that the proportion of people living alone increased over the years in all age groups. The figures were witnessed the highest for people aged 55-64.
In 1850, it was not noticed for the data of the under 37 age group. The figures for people aged 37-46 and 47-54 were similar, at about 2.5%, while this rate was less than 3% at the age of 55-64. In 1900, the percentage of those aged 37-46 remained unchanged, while a slight increase was given for the 47-54 and 55-64 year-olds, compared to just over 2% for those in the 27-37 category.
Regarding the year 1950, nearly 2% of people living alone belonged to the 17-26 age group. Whereas the figures for those in the 55-64 year-olds rose dramatically to reach 9%, other age groups only grew slightly. In 2000, it can be seen that there was significant growth in the proportion of people living alone, with the percentage of the 55-64 year-olds nearly doubled to 17%, by followed by those aged 47-54 and 27-36, at 13% and 8% respectively. While 5% of the 17-26 age group lived alone, the figure was 7% for the 37-46 year-olds.
