Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge specific points made in the reading passage.
In the reading material, the author cites three reasons to support the viewpoint that bees don’t exist on Earth as early as 20 million years ago. Nevertheless, the lecturer in the listening material argues that bees can possible exist 20 million years ago on Earth and she thinks the reasons from the skeptics are not convincing.
First and foremost, the author argues that there is no fossils of actual bees 20 million years ago and the earliest preserved body of bees is 100 million years ago. However the speaker argues that although it’s true that there is no fossil, it is probably because the body of bees can’t be preserved. The body of insects can be preserved in the special liquid produced by trees and it is very rare. The lack of quantity doesn’t mean that bees don’t exist.
In addition, the article mentions that bees have close association with the flowering plants but that kind of plants don’t exist until 125 million years ago so the bees may not exist. The speaker cast doubts on this kind of certain conclusion that bees may have the mutual relationship with non-flowering plants like pine-tree before flowering plants exist. After a period of time when flowering plants exist, the bees start to build connection with them.
Finally, the third reason from the article argues that the structures that resemble bees’ nest lack the detail of caps which is common in the modern bees. The speaker counteracted that the chemical from the water-proof material used by both modern bees and the fossil is the same which can be an evidence that bees exist.
