Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are both about saving rhinoceroses from extinction. The reading proposes several solutions to protect rhinos from being poached for their horns, while the lecturer counterargues. She is of the opinion that all of these solutions have significant weaknesses.
First of all, the writer of the reading suggests that rhinos can be protected by dehorning. Removing rhinos' horns are not harmful since medical equipment and drugs can calm them. This suggestion is challenged by the lecturer who mentions that even though humans have time and money to dehorn rhinos, the chance of rhinos surviving would decrease. Without horns, rhinos could not protect themselves and their young. Thus, it is not a practical solution.
Secondly, the author claims that the demand for rhino horn would decrease by educating consumers that it has no health value. However, the lecturer points out that consumers, who buy rhino horns have strong and ancient cultural beliefs about its health benefit, are unlikely to change their minds about purchasing rhino horns. Therefore, it is not an effective way to prevent rhinos from being poached.
Finally, the author asserts that if government sales of the arrested rhino horn become legal, the price of rhino horn will decline and the number of poached rhinos will decrease. Nevertheless, the lecturer says that there would be more people buying rhino horns after they can be purchased by the government legally. The demand for rhino horns would increase and would lead to an increase in price. Poaching rhino horns might be more attractive to poachers. As a result, the lecturer claims that the result of this solution is unpredictable.
