To understand the most important characteristics of a society one must study its major cities

Essay topics:

To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.

The author states that to understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major society; I concede that a major part in the development of a country is contributed by major cities. Many big businesses, MNCs, and stock exchanges are located in big cities, so there are more diverse people living in big cities; this should be one of the reasons to buttress the author's statement. Beyond this concession, however, I find the statement’s contention indefensible from both an empirical and a normative standpoint.

The chief reason for my disagreement lies in the empirical proof; there would be more diverse people living in a major city, but sometimes it is witnessed that people who reside in a big city have lost cultural background. They tend to behave like following their cultural past is an action which is done by financially backward class people. There is no doubt that there are still some people who follow their own cultural background. Sometimes major cities have to depend on small villages for their vegetation.

To better understand the most important characteristics of society, we need to understand the people who live in rural areas. 70% of the population of India lives in rural areas. Most of the rural areas in India have still preserved the old or ancient places which reflect their society. In India the major cities are political, financial, social capitals; which narrows the understanding of the society. So, to better understand the society one must visit minor cities, towns and villages.

There are many small cities like Dwarka; it holds the religious sentiment of hindu community people, industrial towns like Jetpur; this small town has a population of merely 2-5 lakhs but it is the biggest manufacturer and exporter of cotton sarees and dresses in the whole country. These types of cities portray a better image of a society. Another example are the small villages located in Rajasthan, which better represent the better understanding of how the Rajputana society worked in the past and dominated the region.

In sum, I find the statement indefensible that one should major cities to better understand the most important characteristics of society. The suggestion runs contrary to the overwhelming evidence present in today’s India, which presents the image that to better understand the important characteristics one should visit the small towns, cities or villages.
