The significance of human population growth, agriculture and pesticides in the decline of birds population.
The reading passage and the lecture both discuss about the probable reasons regarding decline of bird's population. The reading passage asserts that human population growth, agricultural lands and pesticides play a significant role in the decline. But the professor in the lecture refutes all of the points for the following three reasons.
First of all, the passage asserts that the growth of human population is engendering the decline of bird's habitats. The human population growth necessitates to build more homes, offices and malls. These will in turn affect greatly in the bird's habitats. But the professor in the lecture opposes this point as she thinks that the human population growth is not the reason in decline of bird's population size in general. There might be some kinds of birds that are in danger but some other kinds of birds might thrive as a result of large human population, for example, pigeons, hawks, seagulls, landfills etc. That's why human population growth can't be a cause for the decline.
Second of all, the passage says that more agricultural lands are needed recently to produce crops. These necessitates to use the bird's habitats as the crop's land. This in turn, reduces the bird's population. But the lecture opposes this reason as it thinks that recently there are some new approaches to produce crops in lesser lands. This won't necessitates to replace the bird's habitats. This recent innovation of growing crops in lesser land refutes the claim of the passage.
Finally, the passage says that there are pesticides that are needed to implement in agricultural lands. This pesticides can kill the pests and contaminate the waters. The birds can be affected by these pesticides through drinking that contaminated water and feeding those pests. In turn, they will die if not it will affect their reproduction system. But the professor in the lecture refutes this as she thinks that today some pesticides are being invented that are less toxic. Moreover, a new approach that pest resistant crops are being introduced that can lessen the use of pesticides. That's why pesticides can't be an issue regarding the decline of birds in future.
