The graph below shows the number of passenger railway journeys made in Great Britain between 1950 and 2004/5
The graph illustrates information about the number of people going on three railway systems, namely the National rail network, the London Underground and the Light rail and metro systems, over a 55-year period from 1950 to 2005.
Overall, it is clear that there were upward trends in three networks over the period in question. Another interesting point is that the National rail network had a similar change as the London Underground.
Regarding the National rail network, the number of passengers rose gradually by 100 million people over the first 10 years, followed by a mild fluctuation between a high of 1,2 billion in 1960 and a low of approximately 625 million passengers in the early 1980s. Likewise, the London Underground experienced a less marked downward trend over the same period, falling from 625 million to 500 million passengers. Subsequently, there were similar changes in both systems as they increased sharply, reaching peaks at the billion mark. The National rail network finished at roughly 1.1 billion passengers in 2004/05.
By contrast, after their beginning in the 1960s, there were fewer passengers in the Light rail and metro systems as the number didn’t exceed 10 million people over the first 15 years. However, the figure increased steadily in 1980, after which it reached approximately 200 million in 2004/05.
