The chart below shows the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK, divided into three categories, from 1995-2002.
The bar chart compares the amount of time spent by UK people on three different categories of phone calls between 1995 and 2002.
It is clear that calls made via the local, fixed lines were the most popular type, in terms of overall usage, throughout the period shown. By contrast, the amount of time used for mobile calls was the lowest shown in the chart, but this category saw a dramatic increase over the period of seven years.
In 1995, people in the UK used fixed lines for a total of over 70 billion minutes for local calls, and half of that amount of time spent for national and international calls. The number of minutes of mobile calls was by far the lowest in that year, at only 4 billion minutes. Over the following four years, the figures for all three types of phone calls increased steadily.
By 1999, the amount of time spent on local calls using landlines had reached its peak at 90 billion minutes. However, after that, the category saw a fall in the number of user minutes, the two other types of telephone calls continued increasing. In 2002, national and international calls using fixed lines passed 60 billion minutes and mobile calls went up to 45 billion user minutes.
