The table below gives information about the average annual distance travelled by adults and the types of travel in 1977 and 2007.
The given table illustrates the annually average distance travelled by mature people with many types of vehicles namely walking, bicycle, car, motorcycle, bus, train, and taxi over a period of three decades starting from 1977 to 2007.
Overall, as can be seen from the table, while an upward trend was seen in the average annual length by car, train, and taxi, the opposite trend was seen in the figures for walking, bicycle, motorcycle, and bus. In addition, car was by far the vehicle used most by the mature people over the given period.
In 1977, the average distance made by using cars was the highest, at about 3500 kilometers, while the figures for walking was significantly lower, at only about 400 kilometers. Meanwhile, people used bicycles and motorcycles for roughly 200 kilometers annually, 100 kilometers for each. Additionally, the annual distance transported by the public transports like buses, trains and taxis were high, at 800 kilometers, 900 kilimeters, and 200 kilometers respectively.
In 2007, the average annual distance made by cars rocketed to 7100 kilometers, doubling the distance at the beginning and remained the highest number in the table. At the same time, there was a slight decline to 80 kilometers and 90 kilometers in the figures for travelling by bicycles and motorcycles respectively, while the quantities of distance made by buses and walking dropped noticeably to only 500 kilometers and 300 kilometers. By contrast, whereas the annually average distance used taxis witnessed a remarkable rise by 600 kilometers to 800 kilometers, an unsignificant growth to 1000 kilometers was seen in the figure for trains.
