Some people think that the main benefit of international cooperation is in the protection of the environment, while others believe that the main interest is in the world of business. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
There is an ongoing debate about the primary focus of international relations. While some contend that its chief purpose is environmental protection, others argue that the economic growth is its main focus. Although both viewpoints hold significant merits, I am inclined to advocate the former for the following reasons.
On the one hand, there are compelling reasons to view environmental protection as the main goal of international relations. First and foremost, carbon dioxide emissions and other harmful pollutants from agricultural and industrial activities have resulted in rising global temperatures, which have a detrimental effect on human health. As a result, it is essential for governments to implement global initiatives to safeguard their residents and promote sustainable and prosperous development. Moreover, rising sea levels have submerged numerous coastal cities across the globe, leading to the disappearance of unique cultural and historical sites, which could negatively affect tourism. Consequently, the loss of cultural diversity may deter international tourists, necessitating coordinated global actions to address the problem.
Conversely, international relations can foster economic activities, driving the economic growth of a nation. The rapid pace of globalisation has required many nations to sign trade agreements that prioritize tax reductions on imports and exports, thereby promoting commercial activities among nations. For instance, the free trade agreement between Vietnam and the United Kingdom has prompted many private enterprises to exchange agricultural and industrial products at lower costs due to reduced tariffs. As a result, these exporters have significantly increased their economic value, contributing to a more developed nation.
In conclusion, although both viewpoints have notable advantages that cannot be overlooked, I argue that environmental protection should be the fundamental purpose of international cooperation. When a country successfully addresses rising sea levels and the impacts of pollutants on human health, it can redirect national funds to other sectors, ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
