The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry, or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
In the leading of individuals across respective fields, the qualities of such a leader varies respectively; the goal of different leadership and occupation require different strategies. One thing is common, a perfect blend of cooperation and competition amongst leaders in different spheres. Though each method has their advantages, they are not of themselves better than the other.
In times of old, where nations were fighting for their independence from subjugation, a representative leader from the colonised people is one who understands the pain of all the class of persons, and effectively balances the need and ‘greed’ of their coloniser. Often, this understanding comes from having cooperated with everyone, and actually seeing and understanding their pain. Like in the case of Mandela from South Africa. Mandela was a young man who not only identified with his people, but also suffered as they did; He went to prison on his quest for his people's freedom for this purpose, and it was seen how all the people who worked with him, they all cooperated, with an understanding of commendary friendship, and the masses listened to him too. Mandela never lorded over his people, as their masters did, which was the difference they needed to fight for their independence. In a research conducted by Ruth Akpan, it was discovered that organisations whose leadership hand is cooperation, thrived successfully, and it is easier for these leaders to effectively cooperate with other people to achieve a goal. Though the time of fighting for independence has passed, instilling the art of cooperation among youngsters is important, as a cooperative individual is listened to easily and worked with genuinely.
Competition on the other end, amongst people, organisations, etc. allows rapid growth in a society. As seen in the financial world, different organisations struggle to attain the most profit, better than their counterpart. Though the superiority and other downsides that emerge are not wanted, we see everyone working to pass a milestone attained by another. Competition is also a way to identify the most competent amongst applicants in a job hunt. This strategy is applied in this modern time, whereby applicants are subjected to real-life scenarios. The best is the one who gets the job. So, training youngsters to compete is very invaluable.
However, when people only compete, there is a loss of understanding. Equity is lost, and those less able are not allowed to contribute. Through cooperation allows for a fair platform for all, it also breeds complacency amongst individuals. Critics, however, favour a strong competitor, on the bases that it is a 'Dog eat dog' society, totally eliminating the chance whatsoever for the less able, and narrowing the market size to just a few; we would run out of workers at this rate.
They fail to see the importance of both skill in a successful society. Thus, cooperation, balanced with healthy competition is the best way to go.
