The reading states three theories about the main cause of the sea cows extinction. However, the lecture refutes saying that all the theories mentioned in the reading have some problems.
The first point of dispute is if the overhunting by the Siberian people cause the extinction. The lecture claims that the sea cows were very massive creature and a couple of them cold feed a village of Siberian people for whole month. There was no need for over hunting. On the other hand the reading contradicts this point saying that Siberian people overhunted the sea cows as they were good sources of food in harsh environment.
Another controversial issue is if the decrease in the kelps population cause the extinction. The lecturer says that there were no evidence in that the kelp population affected by the ecosystem disturbance decline. Because the whales were marine animals as well and there were no reports for decline in there population. But, the reading opposes this point saying that the ecosystem disturbance cause decline in the kelp population which is the main source of food for the sea cows.
The final point of dispute is if the European fur traders lead to the extinction. The professor contends that the population of the sea cows was already in decline after the arrival of the European fur traders to the island. Some thing else rather than the European cause the extinction. Yet, the reading refutes this point by stating that European fur traders caught the last sea cow in 1768. which means that they were responsible for the extinction.
