The chart compares the population of male and female students in Britain attending higher education whether they were enrolled in full-time or part-time study in three periods of time. Overall, it is clear that there are more students (men and women) studying part-time than those studying full-time. It is also seen that the pattern for men and women engaged in full-time and part-time study shows an increasing trend in the three periods shown except for men studying part-time.
It can be seen that there were more men studying part-time than women in Britain in the first two periods. The highest figure for men studying part-time was recorded in the first period (1970/71) at one million. In the same period, the number for women engaged in part-time education stood at approximately 775,000, the lowest number seen for women doing part-time study in the three periods. While the population of men enrolled in part-time education dropped in the second period (1980/81), the number of women increased by about 25,000 students. Despite the increase in the figures for both genders studying part-time in the last period (1990/91), the figures for women grew significantly to 1.1 million surpassing the recorded number of men in the first period.
On the other hand, the population of full-time students in Britain falls way behind those students studying part-time. The lowest number of men and women studying full-time can be seen in the first period with figures of about 100,000 men and about 50,000 women. These numbers increased in the second period; however, the figures for women tripled surpassing the population of their male counterparts. In the third period, the number of men and women studying full-time became equal with figures just above 200, 000.
