The given bar graph depicts the proportion of households comparing rental and owned housing in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
To begin with, in 1918, the ratio of rental house was more than triple as compare to owned housing, which is also recorded as the highest with over 75% in given timeframe. However, when the time passed the percentage of rented accommodation start declining and vice versa to owned housing.
In 1939 and 1953, the ratio of rental housing was recorded almost equal with 78% and owned housing was also seen in similar trend with just over 30%. Similarly, in 1961, rented accommodation exceed owned accommodation by nearly 20%. But, in 1971 the ratio of both rented and owned housing are at the same level with just 50%.
Furthermore, after 1971, the trend was changed and till 2011 the owned properties exceed the rental. In 1981, the percentage was recorded roughly 60% and 40% for owned and rented respectively. Moreover, nearly 70% for owned and just above 30% for rented in 1991 and same was accounted in 2001 too. Although, in 2011 the rented properties increased by significant portion then previous and reached up to approximately 35% and owned properties was recorded as roughly 65%.
Overall, as the graph presents, the first half of the given time frame was exceeded by households who rented housing, while after 1971, the trend dramatically changed and vice versa.
