The chart below shows the numbers of male and female research students studying six science-related subjects at a UK University in 2009. Summarize the information, by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

The given bar chart illustrates the gender distribution of students conducting research across a range of fields at a University in the UK IN 2009.

Overall, the proportion of male students who carried out research was higher than the female researchers across five of the disciplines followed. However, the pattern differs with Veterinary Medicine where women outnumbered men. The number of research students following Astronomy and Geology was the same.

The highest was observed in the study of Biology where about 235 male students were occupied along with 200 females. There was a significant amount of men compared to women across three of the subjects: Physics, Astronomy, and Geology. The gender gap between students pursuing Physics was nearly five times as many male students than females.

The exception to this trend is with the course of Veterinary Medicine where the number of women was higher than men (115 vs. 90). Furthermore, the ratios between each gender across Biology, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine was roughly equally represented. The domination of men in Astronomy and Geology was equal in number (approximately 150 students).
