The diagram below show the development of the horse over a period of 40 million years. The evolution of the horse, with particular emphasis on the changing foot structure.
The diagram illustrates the evolution of the equine, which is the prehistoric horse, over the past 50 million years.
In general, the animal has experienced significant modifications in body structure with the most noticeable being the changes in the bone structure of its feet.
The ancestor of the modern horse, also known by its scientific name as Eohippus, was relatively small in size with a short tail, tiny ears, almost no mane, and a stooped back. Its foot was very slender with 4 separated segments. 15 millennia later, however, it became taller and bigger with the most obvious alternation being the reduction of the toe number down to 3, forming a symmetrical structure.
10 million years ago witnessed the development of almost all body parts of the animal which had doubled the size of the formers. The central hoof had prominently evolved compared to the extra toes on both sides while the mane had grown more visible. Eventually, the modern horse (or Equus) exhibits a more erect posture and is more muscular when the mane and the tail have fully developed to become thicker and defined. Especially, the three-joint hoof has merged /fused from distinctive-toed feet with the adjustment of the joints.
