The diagrams below show the life cycle of a species of large fish called the salmon.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The pictures below demonstrate the detailed development process of the salmon.
Overall, there are three main stages in the life cycle of this large fish. Each occurs in different aquatic environments, from the river to the sea.
As can be seen from the diagram, salmon lays eggs in the upper rivers, where the water movement is slow. The eggs can be found under reeds, covered with small stones. Five to six months later, the eggs are hatched. Young salmon, which called fry emerge and moves to the lower river. After four years living in the fast-flowing current, the fry, now called smolt, grow from the average length is about 6 cm to 13 cm.
At the next stage, the smolts move to a contrary aquatic location. They inhabit open seas for approximately five years before becoming mature salmons, which is around 70 to 73 cm in length. The adult salmon continues the life cycle of the species with the new reproduction.
