The pie charts illustrate the transportation of goods in a European country in three different periods: 1800, 1850 and 1900.
Overall, all types were shown to have gone through drastic changes. Canals were the most popular road in 1800, but it was replaced by railways one century later.
In 1800, 68% of goods were transported through canals. This figure decreased to 30% fifty years later, and then only covered 15% of the goods transportation routes in 1900. Contrastingly, railways were the least prevalent mode of transportation for goods in 1800, but the most popular in the other two periods. Between 1800 and 1850, railways experienced a significant increase, from 2% to 50%. This also rose by 20%, covering up 70% of the pie chart in 1900.
Unlike canals and railways, road use experienced little change. Over the three periods, transporting goods through roads displayed a decrease by half. From 30% in 1800, it lowered down to 20% in 1850 and eventually settled at 15% by 1900.
