The graph below gives information about the percentage of people living in Australia who were born in Asia, the UK and other regions.
The line graph illustrates the proportion of Australian citizens who were given birth in three different countries between 1976 and 2011.
It is clear that while the figure for Asia inclined considerably over a 35-year period, the opposite was true for the UK and other regions. Furthermore, there were small changes in the percentage of Australians who were born outside Australia in total.
In 1976, roughly 3% of the Australian population were delivered in Asia while the respective proportions of Australian residents who were born in the UK and other regions were nearly 14% and 11%. Over the following 10 years, the figure for Asia increased by approximately 3%, but those for both the UK and other regions dropped by about 4%. By 2011, the figure for the UK had declined to only 5% while those for Asia and other regions had risen to 15% and about 13% respectively.
Looking at the total percentage, more than 22% of people living in Australia were given birth out of Australia in1976. From 1976 to 2001, there was a slight drop of only 3% in this figure. However, a dramatic increase was seen between 2006 and 2001 with the total percentage of Australians being born outside reaching its peak of 25%.
