The bar chart below demonstrate the information about the hours of teaching done by each teacher in four countries in 2001.
Overall, teachers in the USA worked hard and spent the longest time in upper secondary, while Japanese and Iceland teachers spent less time than in the US.
Teachers in Japan worked for 600 hours in primary school while Spain worked for 650 hours, which was 50 hours more than Japan. However, working hours in Iceland are the lowest and 160 hours lower than in the US. In addition, lower secondary educators in four countries worked more hours than primary school educators, and this figure in the USA was the highest at over 1000 hours.
Upper secondary educators in the USA were the highest at 1099, whereas Japanese teachers were the lowest at 700 hours. Furthermore, the number of teaching hours in Spain is 900, which is 10 hours less than in Iceland. In comparison, the average teaching hours in the USA is much higher than the international average of 870 hours. This suggests that US upper secondary educators are under greater pressure to teach more than their international counterparts.
