The line graph presents the percentage of population in three nations aged 65 and over from 1940 to 2040.
It is noticeable that all three countries share an upward trend in the number of elder people over one hundred-year period. Furthermore, Japan experiences the biggest change compared to Sweden or America.
In 1940, Japanese at the age of 65 and above accounted for just 5% national population but there was 7% and 9% of the elderly in Sweden and USA respectively. The figures for ratio of older people in Sweden and America both increased significantly to 15% in the next 50 years while Japan saw the lowest point of 3% in the number of elder people at the same time.
From 1990 to 2040, Sweden and USA saw the instability in the older population while there is a significant jump in Japanese figure. It is anticipated that Swedish and American population aged 65 and above will triple to around 25 million people and there is an over fivefold increase in the number of elder Japanese.
