The line graph illustrates the proportion of household that owned no car, one car and two or more cars in UK from 1961 to 2001
Overall, it is clear that there was an upward trend in the percentage of families have one car and two or more cars, while the opposite was true for household without car over a 40-year period.
In 1961, nearly 70% of families in the UK did not have a car of their own, compared to about one a third had one car, and no families own two or more cars. However, the proportion of British had one car and two or more cars rose significantly over the next 20 years, reaching 50% and around 15% respectively in 1981. By contrast, the figure for household without car decreased considerably by approximately 40% in the same time.
Looking in the details, a gradual decline in the percentage of car was seen in the families have one cars, a fall of roughly 5% from 1981 to 2001. Likewise, during the same period, the proportion of families had not car continued to decrease slightly to under 30%. In contrast, the figure for families had one cars rose significantly by about 15% at the end of period.
