The line graph shows the number of trips to other countries by UK residents for various purposes between 1989 and 2001.
The line graph illustrates how many trips to other countries by people in the UK for many different reasons between 1989 and 2001. The table indicates the total number of journeys at five-year intervals over the same period.
Overall, most trips were to go on holidays. Besides, except 2001, the total number of trips increased over the period shown.
Looking first at the line graph, the vast majority of trips to other countries were to go on holiday. For example, in 1989, there were 30 million abroad trips for holidays while there were only under 10 million trips for each of three other categories. This figure peaked in 1998, with 50 million trips before decreasing about 10 million in the following years.
The other categories are for business, family visits, and other purposes. While people tend to go abroad more to visit families since 1992, the trips for business and for other reasons went down to reach their lowest points in 2001.
Regarding the table, an upward trend was seen in the period surveyed. After the total number of trips peaked at 73,5 million trips in 1998, that figure fell slightly to reach 61 million in 2001.
