The line graph illustrates the proportion of New Zealand population in different aged groups from 1950 to the present and projection to 2050.
Overall, the number of people aged 35-64 and over 65 show upward trends with former being projected to the most popular group by 2050. While two remaining groups from 1950 to the present, is expected to downturn by 2050.
It can be seen from the graph that in 1950, New Zealand population aged between 15 to 34 was above 30%, racking first among four groups surveyed. This was following by the figure for the 0-14 group (27%), 35-64 (15%) and 65+ (10%). The 15-34 aged group reached a peak at 45 % and decline a little bit at 42.5% in 1990, followed by another decline to only 30% in 2010. At the same time, the population aged between 0 and 14 showed a steady downturn, just under 25% in 2010. Whereas two oldest groups 35 to 64 and 65+ increased sharply to 17% and 11% respectively in 2010.
By 2050, New Zealand population aged 35 to 64 and over 65 will have reached at nearly 35 % and 20% respectively which become the dominant part of population. In other hand the figure for the youngest groups will lower, these are expected to drop dramatically to 29% of the 15-34 aged group and 10% of the population aged from 0 to 14.
