Essay topics:

The pie charts below show the average household expenditures in a country in 1950 and 2010.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The given pie chart illustrates changes in the average proportions of household expenditures in a country between 1950 and 2010.

Overall, it is noticeable that the spending patterns for housing and food shifted considerably while the healthcare section remained the lowest after 60 years.

In the mid-1900s, the average family expenditure on housing took up the highest percentage, at 72.1%, whereas that on healthcare was the lowest, at merely 2.4%. Families allocated 3.3% of their expense on transportation, which was roughly half the figure for education. Meanwhile, food and other expenses accounted for 11.2% and 4.4%, respectively.

In 2010, this country witnessed some major shifts in spending habits. Food became the category that families spend the most money on, contributing 34% to the household expenditure, slightly triple what was seen in 1950. By contrast, the proportion of family spending on housing experienced a significant decrease of about 50% to 22%. Finally, there was also a negligible decline of 0.3% to 6.3% in the educational category, compared to dramatic increases to 19.2% and 14% in the figures for other expenses and transportation.
