The table gives information about the percentage of Australian people living in poverty in 1999. The data are organized in different family types.
Overall, all households considered accounted for 11% of the Australian population. It is noticeable that levels of poverty were higher for single people than for couples, and people with children were more likely to be poor than those without. poverty rates were considerably lower among elderly people.
Aged people were the least likely to be poor, representing the 6% for singles 4% for couples of the total. Closely enough, couples without children were living in poverty at that time with a rate of 7%, a proportion that rises to 12% when considering couples with children.
The highest share of people living in poverty was represented by single parents, one-fifth of the total, with a percentage of 21% in 1999, almost 232000 people. Just 2 percentage points less, single people without children living in poverty were 19% of all the Australian population.
