The two charts demonstrate how much the coffee and the bananas with Fairtrade-label are sold during 1999 and 2004 in five countries in Europe, namely UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
Overall, it is cleared that the markets of the two commodities have become bigger in most countries during the 5 years. In addition, UK was the biggest Fairtrade-labelled bananas market both in 1999 and in 2004 and the biggest market in 2004.
Starting from the first charts, the sales of coffee with Fairtrade-label are merely less than € 3 million in all countries during 1999. However, the figure in UK rose to € 20 million in 2004, almost as much as 14 times of the amount 5 years ago, while the sales in Switzerland and in Belgium had doubled to € 6 million and € 1.7 million respectively. Additionally, the markets in rest countries, Denmark and Sweden, remained at around € 2 million and € 1 respectively during the same time.
Moving to the second table, the Fairtrade-labelled bananas market in UK increased by € 32 million, from € 15 million in 1999 to € 47 million in 2004, and was able to keep its major position amongst the countries. Compared to in 1999, in 2004 people in Switzerland and in Denmark spent € 4.5 million and € 3.6 million respectively more money on bananas. One the contrary, in Belgium and in Sweden, the money flowing to the markets were approximately € 1 million in 2004 which were only about half of the amount in 1999.
