Village of Chorleywood showing development between 1868 and 1994.
The map illustrates the growth of the village of Chorleywood from 1868 to 1994.
As can be seen from the map, there were dramatic changes in the development of the village along with the modernisation of the transport system.
In particular, there were only two main roads recorded in the map in the 1868-1883 period, with the village covering only a small area alongside one of the main roads. That original village is now seen next to the Chorleywood Park and Golf course. From 1883 to 1922, the area was expanded to the south considerably. It was in this period, in 1909 specifically, that a railway was constructed across the newly-existed area, with the Chorleywood station.
Moreover, the enlargement of the village from the east to the west following the railway line continued until 1970. At this time, the transportation facilities were upgraded with a new motorway laid in the west. Since that, several areas of the village have been erected around the intersections of the motorway and the other former ways of commuting, main roads and the railway.
