The graph below shows in percentage terms the changing patterns of domestic access to modern technology in homes in the UK.

The line graph depicts the proportion of novel technology used by the UK residents, namely home computer, mobile phone, CD player, and internet access over the period from 1996 to 2003.

Overall, the figure of all had an upward trend over the period given. Moreover, CD player made up the biggest share while the Internet was the least. In addition, the access to the Internet was two years later than the others.

From 1996 to 1999, there was a marginal increase in the percentage of CD players, from approximately 60% to nearly 65%. Similarly, the access to home computer and mobile phone swelled to around 29% and 25%, respectively. In 1999 the Internet first appeared and only accounted for just above 10%.

The period between 1999 and 2003 witnessed a rapid growth in access to the four listed features. While the percentage of CD player rose gradually, standing at around 80% in 2003, that of the others boomed quickly. As can be seen from the graph, the access to home computer and the internet surged remarkably by nearly 20% and 35% in 2003, respectively. Meanwhile, the percentage of mobile phone was erratic and doubled to 70% in 2003.
