Essay topics:

In some countries, criminal trials are shown on television for public. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

The issue of televising criminal trials for public viewing has sparked a debate regarding whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. While there are valid arguments on both sides, from my perspective, the benefits of televising these trials may be far more significant than the drawbacks.

On the one hand, there can be some minor disadvantages of televising criminal trials for the general public watching. One major concern is the potential infringement on the privacy and fair trial rights of defendants, witnesses, and jurors. In fact, the presence of cameras in the courtroom may cause individuals to feel intimidated or influenced, compromising their ability to participate fully in the proceedings. Another detrimental effect could be the risk of sensationalism and distortion by the media. By way of illustration, television networks may prioritize ratings and sensational aspects of the trial, potentially leading to a biased portrayal of the case.

Nevertheless, television broadcasting criminal trials on media platforms can have major advantages which overshadow these negative impacts. The most obvious benefit could be that it promotes transparency and accountability within the justice system. By allowing the general public to observe court proceedings, it ensures that the judiciary remains open and accessible to all. The second benefit worth mentioning is that televising criminal trials can provide an opportunity for the public to learn about legal procedures, the complexities of criminal cases, and the functioning of the justice system. As a result, this increases understanding can contribute to a more informed society and encourage civic engagement. Another positive impact could be that criminal trials in law courts, which are shown widely in the media, act as a deterrent to potential criminals. When the consequences of criminal behavior are broadcasted, it sends a powerful message to the public, discouraging them from engaging in unlawful activities.

To sum up, despite having some advert impacts, I definitely believe that allowing criminals to be showcased on television still holds significant benefits that somehow contribute to a fair and informed society.
