Some education systems make students focus on certain subjects at the age of 15, while others require students to study a wide range of subjects until they leave school. What are the benefits of each system? Which is better?
Education for teenagers has always been a topical issue throughout our history as the information they have absorbed during their formative years is going to shape their identities and hence roles in a given society. To approach this issue, there two lines of thinking: orientating students towards the subjects that are of great use for their chosen path and introducing students to a variety of subjects before graduation. This essay attempts to point out the advantages of each system and conclude with a personal statement about which one is advantageous.
To begin with, a broad-based system offers students a solid grounding in many important subjects, such civics or arts. By participating in this education system, a 15-year-old student could map out their strengths and weakness, which is critically essential for the development of their self-awareness. In combination with the help of teachers and families, students could use such understanding to set out achievable goals and consequently, create their own niches as adult. Secondly, this educating method allows teenage learners to try their hands at different areas before decidedly channeling their attention and efforts into a particular discipline in higher education. In fact, this practice of learning and teaching is of great help to ill-informed students who wish to realize what area of study is well-suited to them.
On the other hand, a preference-based system focuses on identifying a student’s qualities or potentials and then through consultation between students and career experts, produces a list of jobs relevant to a student’s capabilities. Based on this knowledge, students are able to make a sound decision for their future occupations. This educational approach has proved effective in terms of time-efficiency and career development as students can start to devote their energies into fulfilling their dream jobs in their prime. Secondly, this unidimensional system creates a continuity of academic growth from grade school to university, ultimately resulting in a sophisticated command of a certain discipline. Students of such system are very likely to excel at universities and graduate with a practical understanding and skills that match the labor market’s demands. Studies have shown that most of the countries opting for this system can produce competent workforce because of its advantages over the other one.
In conclusion, both educating orientations have their own merits but from an economic perspective, students from the latter generally outperform the others.
